Indian Wells, Calif., Mar 07, 2011 Something
seemed quite familiar to the thousands of spectators who braved the gale
force winds for women's qualifying on Monday. On court after court, players
were wearing the same dress.
In particular, the purple and lime
adidas ensemble seemed popular, adorning Monica Puig, Aranxta Rus and Sorana
Cistea.
Puig, coming in as a wildcard to
the qualifying round, was first on the court, and downed Anne Keothavong
of the UK 6-1, 6-1.
In an almost simultaneous match on
a nearby court, Sorana Cirstea, in the same dress, fought off wildcard Sabine
Lisicki of Germany 4-6, 7-6(2) 6-2. A bit later, Aranxta Rus was the only
adidas dress-wearer to lose, falling in a three hour match to American Jamie
Hampton, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
To be perfectly honest, wearing the
same dress is not the same sort of fashion gaffe as it would be on the red
carpet, especially in qualifying, but it will be interesting to see tomorrow
if Puig and Cirstea make a matching set when they meet for a spot in the
main draw.
In other qualifying action, Americans
had a so-so day. Madison Keys started them off strong with a 6-4, 6-4 win
over Junri Namigata and then Hampton beat Rus, but Maria Sanchez, Madison
Brengle and Irina Falconi were unable to repeat this success against Mirjana
Lucic, Tamira Paszek and Andrea Hlavackova respectively. WTA qualifying wraps
up Tuesday.
