Lawn Bowling

bocce ball © PHOTOSPORT.COM
Bocce ball or lawn bowling is a sport that used to be played a lot more than it is now. There is evidence that the game was played in ancient times. In 1299, the Southhampton Old Bowling Green Club was founded, which is the oldest sporting orginazion in the world. George Washington is believed to have had a bocce ball court at Mount Vernon. The sport was a component of the original modern Olympic Games in 1896.

In the US its popularity seems to be confined to recreational activity. In the mid-1930s it was an acceptable outlet for female sporting energies along with golf and tennis. These young players pose with a ball, possibly a prize jack as it seems to have its own bag.
