The Turning Point in Women's Tennis

tennis circa 1930 © PHOTOSPORT.COM
At the start of the 1920s, women played tennis - or more appropriately, attempted to play - in heavy, full length dresses. Quite possibly their advancement was held back by anachronistic attitudes of what a woman's place was either in society or on the field.

That all changed in less than the space of a decade. A new attitude took over women's lives in all phases of life including sports, and by 1928 when this photo was taken women were finally free to pursue their goals.

Her dress still reaches below the knees but has loosened to allow the freedom of movement to vigorously play the sport, as her well toned figure attests.
