San Diego, Calif. The first triathlon in history,
the Mission Bay Triathlon, was held in 1974 as a run-bike-swim-run event
on Fiesta Island by the San Diego Track Club. The race consisted of over
5 miles of running, 5 miles of cycling and 600 yards of swimming.
On Oct. 3, 2004, an estimated 1,600 competitors from
around the country returned to essentially the same course, to compete at
the 17th Annual Jamba Juice Triathlon at Mission Bay. The race started and
finished at Ski Beach and featured a 500 meter swim, 15K bike and 5K run,
with elites, six age brackets, a military bracket, and relay, followed by
a kid's triathlon.
The swim is saltwater and cold enough for a wetsuit,
in a calm part of Mission Bay, with the run and bike on a flat road course
with a bridge and a couple of tight turns. Splits were timed with chips.
Top woman and ninth overall was Nicole Newton of San
Diego at 0:56:57, followed closely by Kim Brown (10th, 0:57:36) and Win Misako
(12th, 1:00:06) to round out the top three ladies.
Fourteen-year-old Heather Voight was top Under 15 at
1:09:17. Whitney Spence, 16, won the 16-19 bracket at 1:02:07, Lyndsey Golden
won the 20-24 class at 1:05:56, Lucy Koch won the 25-29s at 1:04:19; Marisa
Gard won the 30-34 at 1:00:39; Christine Brown won the 35-39 at 0:58:51;
Debbie Fritzer won the 40-44 at 1:03:35; Elizabeth Bulman won the 45-49 at
0:59:39; Debbie Gallo won the 50-54 at 1:06:47; Trish Kemper won the 55-59
at 1;12:04; and Sherill Marciano won the 60-64 at 1:40:57.
