SAN DIEGO, Calif. Perhaps the SoCal Scorpions
will have to rename their after-game party "The Sixth Quarter."
This after needing four quarters of regulation and one
of overtime to defeat the LA Amazons 3-0, and pick up their first game of
the season.
Both offenses struggled against stifling defenses. The
closest scoring chance in regulation came late in the first half -- and it
was a defensive chance. Scorpion Athena Reyes downed her team's punt
on the LA one yard line, giving her side's defense a crack at a safety. They
backed the Amazons to the 1/2 yard line, but could not get the quarterback
down in the end zone.
Most of the rest of the game was spent on short drives
between the 35 yard lines.
After regulation ended tied with no score, Los Angeles
(2-3) won the overtime coin toss and elected to receive. WPFL rules provide
for NFL style overtime, in which the first team to score wins.
After going three and out, SoCal was able to come to
the LA 30 year line for a field goal try, but Sonja Baczynski's kick failed.
Los Angeles was unable to get a first down on their next possession, and
SoCal got good field position.
With the clock running down, the Scorpions (1-5) were
able to drive to the 27. As the clock expired, the kick connected.
