SAN ONOFRE, CAL. Nothing shows the growing popularity
of women's surfing than the continued success of the Roxy Wahine longboard
classic. A few years back, the contest had to be split into two days to
accomodate more surfers. Now, in the eight edition of the contest, simultaneous
heats were run to permit the large numbers of Junior (ages 15-19) and Master
(34+) entrants to compete.
The contest has been plagued by glassy surf in the past,
but this year, the Old Man's break at San Onofre delivered 3 foot waves --
ideal for the longboard-only contest in which competitors scored points for
classic moves. Stunts are discourages in the classic contest, with points
scored for wave selection, length of ride, and classic form and moves including
nose riding.
This year, the 15s and olders surfed on Saturday, while
the Menehunes and Teenie Wahine classes surfed Sunday.
